Regular $4.071 and diesel $5.599 still pay the facing

NEW YORK — Sept. 8, 2026 — U.S. regular gasoline averaged $4.071 a gallon in the week ended Aug. 31, the Energy Information Administration said. On-highway diesel averaged $5.599. Regular was down 1.4 cents from the prior week. Diesel was down 5.3 cents. A snack buyer does not post those numbers on a pump. A snack buyer still lives with the trip they describe.

This desk publishes those two lines — regular and diesel — as lot traffic. We do not publish midgrade and premium. Those grades are a fuel-desk question. The facing question is whether the lot is still sending a shopper into the first two feet of checkout and the cooler door. When national regular slips and diesel drops a nickel, dwell at the coffee island and the travel-center snack run are not the same week.

Why the interrupt still rides the island

The interrupt snack — candy, a single-serve salty, a fountain upsell — is paid for by a trip that started at the island. A week when regular falls and the lot stays busy is a different merchandising week from a week when regular spikes and the shopper pays and leaves. EIA’s national regular print for the week ended Aug. 31 is $4.071. That is the trip price, not the ring. The ring is whatever the first two feet convert after that trip.

Casey’s General Stores, which operated 2,959 stores as of July 31, told investors on June 9 that fiscal 2026 inside same-store sales rose 4.2 percent, led by prepared foods and non-alcoholic beverages, and that fuel gross profit rose 21 percent. President and CEO Darren Rebelez said the fuel team “balanced gallons sold with fuel margin.” The fiscal 2026 10-K said all but six of the 2,944 year-end locations sold fuel. The facing on those lots still rides the print EIA just posted.

Diesel is the second line for a reason

Diesel is the travel-center and fleet lot. This week diesel fell more than regular. The box next to a truck parking stall kept a different shopper than a suburban gasoline site. Energy, water, and a destination snack run live or die on that mix. Treating diesel as a fourth gasoline grade hides the lot that actually buys a larger pack. We will not dress the homepage board as a four-grade pump roundup.
